Our little Layla turned 5 years old on Friday! I can’t believe it’s been 5 years… it seems like just yesterday we were making the trek up to Illinois to pick up our 7-pound, wrinkly, bundle of puppy joy!
She’s our princess, more human than dog and an endless pool of love and affection!
(from the day we picked her up, just look at that face!)
Every year we celebrate her birthday and spoil her even more than on a normal day, ha! You can check out her first, second, third, and fourth birthday treats!
How to Make a Peanut Butter Bacon Dog Birthday Cake
This recipe makes a single layer 6-inch cake with a thick layer of frosting on top. The cake and frosting are rich, so it is advisable that your pup share the cake with a few puppy friends!
The first step to make this cake is to cook up 4 slices of bacon. You will use 2 of the slices of cooked bacon, crumbled up in the cake batter and the other 2 will be crumbled up on top of the cake. When you cook the bacon it will render about 2 tbsp worth of bacon grease, this will be used to flavor the cake batter.
The cake batter is a mixture of creamy peanut butter, greek yogurt, milk, eggs, whole wheat flour, baking powder and bacon grease and bacon crumbles. The cake takes about 25 minutes to bake at 350°F.
Be sure to cool the cake completely before frosting and serving. The frosting for the cake is made from cream cheese and creamy peanut butter whipped up with some heavy whipping cream, making it a whipped creamy frosting that is easy to spread!
To frost the cake, spoon the frosting into the center of the cake and spread with a knife. For this cake we only frost the top and leave the sides bare.
Top the cake with the remaining 2 pieces of crumbled bacon. For some extra birthday fun, top with a scant amount of sprinkles!
