Peanut Butter Glazed Sweet Potato Doggy Donuts

With the holidays fast approaching and our lives being filled with parties, cookies and other indulgences it seems only fair to spoil our pups too! If you are a regular blog reader, you know I love spoiling our vizsla Layla with homemade treats, especially for special occasions! You can check out all her birthday cakes and other treats here :).

Just like I haven’t met a human that doesn’t like donuts, I haven’t meet a dog that dislikes them either 😉 These doggy donuts are baked in a donut pan. The batter is a simple recipe made with mashed sweet potato, creamy peanut butter, an egg, whole wheat flour, baking powder and milk. The glaze is made with peanut butter and coconut oil melted together. It’s easy to dip the donuts in the glaze to coat the top and sides.

Is sweet potato good for dogs?

Yes! Many dog foods and treats contain sweet potato because it is easy on dog’s digestive systems. Sweet potatoes are a good source of fiber and a variety of vitamins and antioxidants. Just like sweet potatoes can be part of a healthy human diet, so too can they be part of your dog’s diet. For the highest nutritional value, when your make the sweet potato for the donuts, boil or steam them rather than roast.

Of course, these doggy donuts are treats and should be eaten in moderation and not in place of your dog’s normal diet. Depending on the size of your dog. you may need to cut the donuts into smaller pieces for appropriate portion size. Also note, these doggy donuts are baked, I would not suggest feeding your dog classic fried donut.

How to Store Doggy Donuts

This recipe makes a half dozen doggy donuts. Since we don’t want our dogs eating them all in one sitting, unless they are sharing them with their puppy pals you will need to store them. The doggy donuts keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container up to 5 days or in the freezer up to 3 months.

Looking to spoil your pup even more? Here are some additional topping ideas:

As you can see from the photos, I decorated each donut with a mini Milk Bone treat. I get the tiny treats from their doggy trail mix. You could also sprinkle them with crushed peanuts. Or if you want to go really crazy, I made them topped with smoked salmon (combo may sound gross to humans, but is loved by dogs!) for a treat exchange!

HI – any suggestion on a substitute for coconut oil? would regular oil or olive oil work?

    • Laura said:

You could just skip the coconut oil, as long as you are using a smooth peanut butter, the coconut oil just helps make it a little smoother!

Can i use water instead of milk? Since my dog has a dairy allergy.
    Thank you!
