Christmas Thumbprint Cookies
I hope you all had a great weekend! We spent ours continuing to get in the Christmas Spirit! With how nice the weather has been nearly all of December, it has hardly felt like Christmas is coming. Last Wednesday, following our annual tradition, we went to see A Christmas Carol at Fords Theater in DC and finally it started feeling like Christmas is close!
This was our 4th year seeing A Christmas Carol together. Walter grew up in Maryland 20 minutes outside DC. When he was young there were 3 shows his family would often go to at Christmas time – The Nutcracker at Warner Theater, Handel’s Messiah at The Kennedy Center and A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theater. Four years ago he brought me to all 3 in the weeks leading up to Christmas. They were all enjoyable, but hands down A Christmas Carol was my favorite so we have gone back every year since!
The theater is beautiful and obviously very historic, which adds to the experience. The cast is so dynamic and engaging they make you feel like you are part of the show. Many of them come back year after year, so it is nice to recognize them. There are quite a few children in the cast and it is always amazing to me how they are so young singing and dancing up on stage in front of so many people. The story, of course, stays the same year after year, but especially this year we noticed a bunch of technology upgrades which was cool to see. The Dickens’ holiday classic inspires charity and each year the company choose a local charity to support. This year they partnered with N Street Village, which is the largest provider of housing and supportive services for homeless and low-income women in D.C. They have raised over $460,000 over the past 6 years for local charities!

Our weekend also centered around Christmas.
On Friday night we went to Walter’s company holiday party at the Fairmont in DC. It was fancy and festive as always. We took this picture before we left the house, it ended up being the only one I took all night, we were trying to get the tree in the background – total fail 🙂
On Saturday we met up with Walter’s sister, cousin and his wife to go to a european holiday market in Old Town Alexandria. The market was very disappointing and not at all what we were expecting, but we did get some mulled wine to keep warm that came in a souvenir mug! 
Last night we headed over to Walter’s aunt and uncle’s house to celebrate christmas with some of his family (we will be in CT with my family for Christmas). I decided to whip up some Christmas Thumb-Print Cookies for the celebration.

Christmas Thumb Print Cookies
- Yield: 20 1x
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks) – room temperature
- 2/3 cup white, granulated sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups + 2 tbsp all purpose flour
- dash of sea salt
- 3/4 cup jam (approximately)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Beat butter and sugar on high in an electric mixer until fluffy, about 2 minutes
- Beat in egg yolk and vanilla extract
- Add flour and salt, mix until just fully incorporated and dough forms a ball
- Form into 1 inch balls and place on baking sheet
- Press your thumb into the center of each ball forming a shallow hole where the jam will go
- Bake for 8-10 minutes
- Remove from oven and fill the thumb print holes with a dollop of jam
- Return to over for 4-5 more minutes
- Remove from oven and cool for 2 minutes before transferring to cooling rack
