Blood Orange Baked Donuts
It’s Blood Orange Season! These Blood Orange Baked Donuts are perfect for brunch, bridal showers, birthday parties or as a fun treat! They are a lightened up donut made with greek yogurt, coconut oil and a coconut butter glaze.
Guess who’s back in town!? That’s right, say hello to blood orange season! If you ask me, they are one of the highlights of the winter season. When it’s cold and utterly miserable outside, these babies can light up your day, especially, you know, when you put them in donuts 🙂
Moro Blood Oranges, which are the smaller, darker and usually sweeter variety are only in season from December through March. I usually do not see them in stores until early January and they are gone by the time March rolls around, so the season can be short depending on where you live and shop.
Their timing is pretty clutch, as they arrive just in time for cold season. Which is a good thing since they can have up to 40% more vitamin C than other orange varieties.
Blood Oranges are also generally sweeter than other oranges making them better for juicing and using in baked goods. These Blood Orange Baked Donuts are a great addition to a brunch, bridal shower, birthday party or just as a a sweet weekend treat!
Though they are donuts, which pretty much screams “I am bad for you”. I’ve made a lightened up recipe that uses greek yogurt and coconut oil in the donuts and coconut butter in the glaze. The blood orange juice and zest give them a sweet, tangy taste and, of course, that beautiful pinkish hue 🙂
