Caramelized Onion Dip
Caramelized Onion Dip, loaded with thinly sliced, perfectly caramelized onions and baked until sizzling. It’s a great dip for entertaining.
This dip is inspired by an onion dip I tried at Hanks Oyster Bar about a year ago and have been dreaming about ever since! I’d never had an onion dip that was loaded with so many onions and I knew from the first bite that I would need to recreate it!
This Caramelized Onion Dip is for true onion lovers! It’s packed with caramelized onions you can see with every bite. Sweet and savory, it’s difficult to stop dipping once you start! It’s warm and delicious and would make a great addition to your New Year’s Eve appetizer line-up!
How to Make Caramelized Onion Dip
The first step is caramelizing the onions, this step takes some time, but it’s so worth it to get those sweet, golden brown onions. Start by melting butter over medium heat, then add the thinly sliced onions and salt. Reduce the heat to medium-low, you don’t want to risk burning any onions in the caramelization process. Sauté until the onions cook down by about half. Add in some brown sugar, dry sherry and balsamic vinegar to season the onions and assist with the caramelization. Continue to sauté until the onions turn golden brown and reduce by half again.
In a bowl, mix together sour cream, mayonnaise, dijon mustard and garlic powder. Fold the caramelized onions and gruyere cheese into the mixture. Transfer the onion dip to a crock or small cast iron skillet. Top with bread crumbs and grated parmesan cheese. Bake for about 8 minutes at 450°F to brown the top, the dip will be sizzling. Serve the hot for best results.
What to Serve with Caramelized Onion Dip
I think the dip works best with a sturdy potato chip, like kettle cooked or ruffle cut. It would also work with carrot chips or pretzel thins. Anything that is strong enough to hold and wide enough to truly dip. It’s not a thin, creamy dip, so something like carrot sticks or thin potato chips don’t work well.
